Health Risks of 5G & the Internet of Things

5G will change everything, everywhere, forever. Lots of “evers” there, aren’t there? If not forever, at least until 6G rolls out…

At any rate, 5G (“fifth generation”) is the latest in wireless Internet technology and promises lightning-fast download speeds as well as a new wireless world of connected objects, called the “Internet of Things.”

Any kind of new technology that promises earnings in the trillions of dollars for nations like the United States, China, Japan, and Russia will be pushed into overdrive with all possible expediency. Even if it compromises the health of its citizens.

5G – A “National Priority”

On June 20th 2016, then FCC chairman Tom Wheeler excitedly announced the rollout of 5G applications and networks as a complete “game-changer” and a “national priority” that will generate “tens of billions of dollars.” On July 14, 2016, a vote by the FCC confirmed that 5G would move ahead.

Wheeler admitted that implementing the new frequencies would necessitate new antennas – intended to aim and amplify the signals, and many, many of them—in fact, an entirely new infrastructure and a massive deployment of towers throughout the United States.

The expected benefits of 5G LTE include up to 100 times the power and speed of current 4G LTE technology. Along with it comes the “Internet of Things”, or IoT. a whole new world of more Internet-connected devices than we’ve ever seen. Worldwide it is estimated that in 2020, 31 billion objects will be a part of the IoT and by 2025 that number will exceed 75 billion. The goal in creating this matrix network of “smart” objects is greater efficiencies, greater convenience—and greater control.

But while we might be excited about all this amazing new technology, we should also be concerned about its dangers. We’ve already been learning about the dangers of our current technology—right?

But what new levels of EMF radiation will 5G and the “Internet of Things” bring to the table, and how concerned should we be?

5G and the Internet of Things

What makes 5G more intimidating and poses more health risks is that 5G achieves its super-fast streaming speeds and infinite data capabilities by tapping into a never-before used bandwidth called the millimeter wave (MMW) which is a pulsed radio wave of extremely high frequencies of 30 GHz up to 300 GHz (as well as utilizing mid-range and low-band frequencies from 1 to 30 GHz).

5G will reduce download times to mere nanoseconds—10 gigabits per second, at an estimate, which is some 50 to 100 times faster than our current 4G speeds.

Plus, 5G will also require a crazy amount of new EMF-emitting wireless transmission towers, placed every 750 feet apart, because MMWs cannot travel as far or as effectively as 4G waves, nor do they travel well through solid objects, poor weather conditions, buildings, houses, stadiums—any kind of interference.

What this means is that this new technology will require thousands, in fact, millions more transmitters—of all kinds—more routers in our homes and small smoke-detector sized transmitters on telephone poles on every street, highway, and rural route around the world, and an 11-fold increase of satellite transmitters in outer space.

Desiree Jaworski, executive director of the Center for Safer Wireless, explains, “5G signals will be harder for people to avoid. Right now, you don’t have to live next to a cell tower. If you’re concerned about it, you can move away. But once they have these cell antennas everywhere, you won’t be able to do that.”

How Much Radiation Will Come from All These “Things” in the “Internet of Things”?

The new “Internet of Things” will bring us a whole new world of convenience (and commerce). Picture an entire world of connected devices—from water meters, to pill bottles, to street lights, to home furnaces and air conditioners.

Our machines, cars, buildings, and devices will all be embedded with electronics, software, sensors, routers, actuators, and network connectivity, enabling everything to communicate in nanoseconds, seamlessly.

In short, wireless technology will permeate every area of our lives from agriculture to air travel.

For example, farmers will be able to track the efficacy of seed planting and manage crops and fertilization—all via enhanced technology.

When we get in a car accident, our cars can wirelessly transmit information about the accident and our medical histories before we get to the pre-programmed hospital of our choice.

But all of these devices emit EMF radiation—and 5G itself generates strong, pulsed, high-frequency radio waves that could be more dangerous to human health than our present technology, which isn’t going away just because we are adding 5G to the mix. Our cumulative and ever-present exposure to both low-frequency and high-frequency radio signals might be the most dangerous part of 5G deployment.

Pulsed Millimeter Waves and Their Dangers

5G delivers higher frequency wave lengths in very close proximity to us. This is because millimeter wave technology will require many more EMF-emitting transmitters, as stated earlier.

And although these MMWs don’t travel well through buildings, they can still penetrate into human skin, though not as deeply as 4G and 3G.

Many people think that this means 5G will be less harmful to our bodies. However, 5G uses different technologies than previous networks that might make it more harmful even if it can’t travel as far. The coverage is beam-based in 5G, not cell based.

This means that 5G uses Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) which expands beyond current networks by adding multiple antennas to the base station. The increase in antennas helps create more focused energy using digital or 3D beamforming that might increase your EMF exposure when you are using your device.

In addition, the on-and-off pulsing of digital wireless signals are more biologically active and more dangerous than the old-school corded technology that uses a constant wave (analog). According to Dr. Martin Pall, 5G has a much more rapid pulsation.

“5G will be much more active in activating the VGCCs and producing health impacts because of its rapid absorption by materials in the body, because of its very rapid pulsations and because of the huge number antennae they are planning to put up, at least 200 times the number of antennae from all current cell phone towers. What this means is that the impacts on the outer one to two inches of our bodies will be massive.”

Dr. Martin Pall believes that 5G specifically will have massive impacts on the outer one to two inches of our bodies. Pall predicts blindness, hearing loss, skin cancers, male infertility, autoimmune diseases, and thyroid issues.

One study revealed that waves over 60 GHz penetrated skin by 90 percent. This type of skin penetration can lead to skin disease, inflammation (which is the crux of most modern diseases from diabetes to autoimmune diseases of all kinds), and cancer.

A recent study by Israeli scientists reports that 5G frequencies resonate more intensely with human sweat ducts, sending EMF signals more effectively throughout the body.

We don’t know for sure how much these higher frequencies will affect our bodies, but even with 5G present, 4G frequencies will still be very much in use.

In 2011, the World Health Organization classified radio frequency (RF) radiation as a class 2B carcinogen.

How to Protect Yourself from 5G Radio Waves and EMF Radiation

So, yes, 5G is arriving whether we want it or not. While many cities and regions are fighting 5G deployment, it seems to be doing little to stop worldwide 5G adoption. What we can do is mitigate the potential risks and raise awareness that 5G and EMF radiation should be studied more before being fully adopted by the masses.

Here are the best things you can do to protect yourself and your family from these stronger radio waves.

  1. Don’t buy 5G-enabled devices. 5G devices require a specific modem that can handle it’s greater data speeds and data capacity. 5G-enabled devices have only started to be unveiled in 2020, and it might be awhile before every cell phone has 5G capabilities. Stick with your current phone and say no to 5G home fixed wireless Internet (which connects your router to a 5G antenna on your house instead of to a fiber-optic cable going to your cable company).
  2. Limit your exposure. Limit the time you spend using any one electronic device, and use them with as many wireless capabilities switched off as possible—WiFi, Bluetooth, Cellular, etc. Use wired accessories when you can!
  3. Move routers to other rooms where the family does not “hang out” most often—limiting radiation from the main source. You should be at least 10 feet away from your WiFi router.
  4. Never put mobile devices directly against your body. For instance, don’t put a cell phone against your head, in your bra, or even in your pocket without an EMF shield.
  5. Watch the news and look for future studies. We still don’t know how 5G will affect our health in the future. You will need to stay informed of the risks and emerging ways to protect yourself and family.

What it comes down to is that we live in a world where technology is rapidly progressing, and if we want to protect ourselves from 5G radiation, we’re going to have to do our own homework and utilize whatever shelters from this storm we can.
